Adios, Madrid!

Sunday was the last day of Josh’s conference and our last full day in Madrid. On Josh’s lunch break, we went into the city to see a few more things, take some pictures and walk around a bit.

This is 0 kilometer – the exact center of Spain.

This is in Puerta de Sol, another square in Madrid. This is a major metro stop and it’s always busy with all sorts of activity. There are shops, restaurants and street performers.

Speaking of street performers. I caught Mickey Mouse waking up from a nap...

This is a famous statue in Puerta del Sol. Bears used to live in the royal hunting grounds and the tree the bear is pawing at, the madrono tree, produces a berry used to make a traditional liquer.

We stopped for churros con chocolate – which is churros with hot chocolate with a pudding-like consistency. Very good!

Josh had a churro and sipped his coffee…

I devoured the rest of the churros.

When Josh went back to the conference, it was time for a siesta for me! I could really get used to those! After I woke up, I blogged a little and I started to pack our. Once he got back, we finished packing and hopped on the metro at Atoche Renfe to go into the city one last time. An interesting fact about this metro station: it was bombed on 9/11 a few years after the 9/11 attacks in the US. You can read more about it here. It was pretty crazy to standing in a metro station, knowing something so horrible had happened there.
We got off at a new stop this time since we had plans to go to an ice bar after dinner. We got off at the closest stop to the ice bar and started looking for restaurants nearby. I don’t recall the name of the plaza, but it was very swanky. I wasn’t in the mood for fancy tapas, so it really wasn’t what we were looking for. We were both pretty hungry. I was actually craving Asian food or a big plate of spaghetti. We left the plaza and started to explore the side streets for a good place to eat. We finally found a place to eat. We ended up getting the menu of the day at a restaurant on one of the side streets. We each got 2 different kinds of paella as our first course. For the 2nd course, Josh got some sort of delicious beef and I got Dogfish (I really didn’t even know that was a real fish). The fish wasn’t bad, but the beef was SO good! We ate dessert then left for the Ice Bar. I was exhausted, especially after having a full belly, but I was excited to go into an ice bar just for the experience. We had a Groupon that was good for 3 drinks, but we agreed that really just wanted 1 each and we would go back to our hotel since Monday morning came early. Little did we know, the bar closed at 11:00 on Sunday night. By the time we finished dinner and got there, it was 11:30. That seems late, but it’s pretty normal to have dinner after 9:00 around here. I've kind of gotten used to it. I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to go to the Ice Bar, but I was also eager to get some sleep since we had to get up early Monday morning to catch a train.

This is me waiting for the metro to come take us back to our hotel in Madrid for the last time. I haven’t been in many metro stations, so I’m not sure if it’s typical or not, but the stations sometimes stink…kind of like sewage. That was obviously not enjoyable, but other than that, we didn’t have any negative experiences on the Madrid Metro. It was quite easy to navigate, even for me.

We had a great time in Madrid and there are still things we didn’t get to do. Leaving was bittersweet. I was comfortable there and we still could have spent a couple days there doing other things, but I was eager to see our next destination…TOLEDO!

The Royal Palace

Saturday was a lazy day for me while Josh was in his conference. I went back to sleep after breakfast and basically did nothing until he got out. He skipped the session immediately after lunch so we could go visit the Royal Palace. The conference runs until 9pm the last two days and we leave Madrid Monday morning, so we don't have a lot of time left to visit things during the day.

We saw some interesting things along the way...
There are lots of characters that we're familiar with in the squares. Most of the costumes are pretty horrible, but they're entertaining.

 Gepetto's shop!

Pronovias! If I was still engaged while we were here, I probably would have spent a full day in this store!

The palace is amazing! It's so big, so there's lots of walking! We did the audio tour and it was pretty good. It's definitely a lot cheaper than going on a guided tour and we didn't have to be part of a group. Rick Steves has a great self guided tour in his book, but we thought it would be faster to be able to listen. The palace has over 2,000 rooms, but the tour took us through 23. The royal pharmacy was closed, so we didn't get to see it. There are SO many chandeliers throughout the palace, very old art of course, silk walls in some of the rooms, it's just crazy. To walk through a palace that so many royal families have lived in was an unbelievable feeling.

We weren't able to take pictures inside any of the rooms, but we did get one just inside the entrance.

More of Madrid

Thursday was the first day of Josh's conference. I was SO tired still, I went back to sleep after he left the room. I kind of lounged around the majority of the day. I did venture out to lunch and I definitely got a little more motivated to learn Spanish! My waiter spoke very little English and I speak very little Spanish, so it was quite difficult. I managed to get what I wanted and pay, but it definitely would have been easier if my Spanish was a little better. The food was delicious! I got a beer, paella, grilled tuna and watermelon (as dessert). It was all good, but the tuna was AMAZING!

When Josh got out of the conference, we went out with a group of people who are attending the conference. I had a big lunch, so I wasn't very hungry. We shared a small plate of patatas and pork. It was nice to get to meet some of the people from the conference. There were other attendees and speakers out at dinner with us and two of the speakers actually picked up the tab. SUPER nice of them! After dinner, we came back to the hotel for a happy hour reception. There are people from all over the world attending the conference, so it's really cool to chat with them. This is a great networking opportunity for Josh, too!

While Josh was at his conference on Friday, I slept in then went to the grocery store. I really like to go to grocery stores when I'm in a new country. It seems silly, but I like to see how their food is different from ours.

Josh got out of his conference a little early and we went into the city. First, we went to the Royal Palace (Palacio Real de Madrid). We saw it from the outside since it closed in an hour and we wanted to make sure we had enough time to see it all.
Us from outside the palace gates.

 The palace and courtyard.

This is the beautiful cathedral across from the palace.

I don't know what this place was, but I really liked the door.

A cute little pedestrian street. The yellow building is a restaurant, but it wasn't open.

Plaza Mayor at night. If you notice the arches at the corners, those lead to pedestrian streets with more shops and restaurants.

This is a close up of one of the arches. We ate dinner at another restaurant just outside the Plaza Mayor Friday night. This one was not as good. The deal was 12 tapas and a pitcher of sangria for €23. There were only 2 or 3 tapas that we liked and the sangria was just OK.

After dinner, we went back to the hotel for happy hour with the other conference attendees. Josh may or may not have let one of the guys give him a mohawk that he forbids me to post and we did a group ice bucket challenge that I'm also not allowed to post because he may have said mohawk in the video. We're both so much more adventurous when we're on vacation!

Hola - From Madrid!

Time really does fly! It seems like just a few weeks ago, we found out we would be coming to Spain...now we're here! We left BWI for ATL Tuesday at 2:00pm. We had a 2 hour layover in Atlanta, so we grabbed a bite to eat while we left. We ate at Grind House, which has some great burgers! The service was also really good. We got the Dixie Burger which had pimento cheese and fried green tomatoes on it. YUM! We landed in Madrid Wednesday morning at 8:00 (local time, so the flight wasn't as long as it sounds). It was quite a long flight though, and it was overnight. I was exhausted since we had been awake since before 3:00am, so I didn't think sleep would be a problem. I thought I would watch a movie and have dinner, then sleep for the rest of the flight. Dinner wasn't bad. Since it was an international flight, Delta serves alcohol for free. I had 2 glasses of red wine while I watched The Other Woman...hilarious! When the movie went off, I settled down to go to sleep (Josh was already asleep by this time). I tossed and turned for the remainder of the flight. Needless to say, I was exhausted by the time we landed in Madrid. The best sleep I got on Tuesday was a 20 minute nap from BWI to ATL. Sleep deprived was NOT the way I was planning on starting the trip.

When we landed, we basically just walked off the plane, got our luggage, got our passports stamped and went to the Metro. No customs forms, no bag searches...nothing. We had some difficulty purchasing tickets for the metro since we slacked and didn't get Euros before we left the US and the automated machine only takes Mastercard. We had US $, Visa & an Amex. Currency exchange was about a 20 minute walk through the airport - I was tired and hungry by this point, so that wasn't happening. We found an office where we could buy a day pass with our Visa, so that's what we did! I think it was about 8 Euros each, vs 2 Euros each for a one way ticket. We knew we would be using it a couple more times that day, so it worked out well. We could have gotten it quite a bit cheaper if we'd had Euros or a Mastercard. We had to transfer twice then walk a few blocks to get to our hotel. We got to our hotel around 10:00am, not expecting to be able to check in, but we wanted to drop our bags off before we went out for food. We were pleasantly surprised that they let us check in so early! SO thankful because we definitely needed to freshen up!

Our room is really nice! We're staying at the Hotel Atocha, which is where Josh's conference is held, so it's very convenient for us. It's not in the city center, but the metro is only a 2 block walk, so it's not bad at all. Here are a few pictures:

The bathroom is very open. The toilet is in a separate tinted glass closet (you can't see in or out of it), the shower is all glass and the sink is between the shower and toilet. This is looking from the sink, through the shower, to the bed.

This is looking from the sitting area, through the shower, to the sink area, where you can see me. Obviously, there's very little privacy. It's a good thing I'm sharing the room with my husband! The shower is awesome though! It has a rain shower, which I now really want in our next house!

This is the sink, with the water closet on the left. It's black glass, so at least you can't see through that part! Overall, the hotel has a very modern feel. Breakfast is included, so that's a nice plus.

After we got settled into our room, we went to grab some food since we were both starving! We ended up going to a tapas place that serves bocadillos (sandwiches). We got 6 mini sandwiches and fries with cheese and "bacon", which was actually ham. It was all pretty good.

We walked around a little and got some cash. We were both pretty tired, so we went back to our hotel room for a siesta. After a little nap, we were feeling MUCH better, so we went back into the city. Josh has been reading Rick Steves' guide for a few months, so he had several places in mind that he wanted to see. We were a little hungry, so we stopped for tapas and vino. Lots of tapas restaurants will give you a small tapa if you just order drinks. Our first stop gave us one that was really good! We didn't get a picture of it, but it was a little skewer of an olive, a pepper and some sort of salty fish...come to find out, the salty fish was an anchovy and they're actually quite delicious!

Our tapas. We got a bocadillo with ham, a bocadillo with mussels and a salmon and queso crostini. It was all pretty tasty.

We did a little more walking and went to the Prado. Neither of us are really huge into art, but it was still amazing to see things SO old. There were tons of paintings and sculptures from the 1500s and even older. If you ever find yourself in Madrid, I definitely recommend going, especially since it is free from 6:00-8:00pm.

We weren't allowed to take pictures inside, but this is one of Josh outside.

I had read about Retiro Park, so we made our way there just after leaving the Prado.

A very pretty cathedral we saw along the way.

 Inside Retiro park.

You could rent boats in this little lake. I thought it would be fun. I told Josh we could be like Ariel and Eric, except we would be surrounded by a lot of people and I wouldn't sing. He wasn't up for it. Haha.

Crystal palace!

 Inside Crystal Palace.

There's a little lake in front of Crystal Palace with ducks and turtles. I thought this duck looked really cool!

The hubs and I in front of my palace. ;-)

 Leaving Retiro Park

I really liked Retiro Park. It used to belong to the royal family, but it was opened to the public by Charles III. It's beautiful and HUGE and we probably only saw half of it. I hope we get to go back before leaving Madrid!

The Palace Hotel - it's across from Retiro Park. Very pretty and very pricey!

After leaving Retiro Park, we went to Plaza Mayor. SO much history here! Public executions and bullfights used to take place here. It's hard to believe that when you walk through it today. It's very lively with lots of tourists and locals, street performers, etc. The first story is full of restaurants and shops. The upper floors are private apartments. A few of them were available for rent. They are EXPENSIVE! To buy one, the price ranges from€400,000 for a small studio to about €2 million for a larger apartment. CRAZY!

For dinner, we ate at a restaurant just outside Plaza Mayor. The prices were much better and there's still plenty of people watching. The menu of the day was €10,75, but we opted to pay extra to sit outside (it's not uncommon for restaurants to charge a little extra for outdoor seating, but there are plenty that do not), so we paid €12 each. For that price, we got a drink (I chose sangria and Josh got a beer...so far, this has been my favorite sangria so far), a soup or salad (Josh got a salad with fresh tuna and I got a pumpkin and ham soup...sounds odd, but it was SO good), an entree (Josh got chicken with patatas - fries - and I got grilled salmon with a side salad) AND dessert or coffee (Josh got coffee and I got some really good chocolate ice cream). We were very happy with the food and the price, especially in such a touristy area!

Menu of the day is pretty common here. It typically includes a drink and 3 courses for pretty cheap. Most places I've seen have 3-4 options per course.

Mercado de San Miguel - this market has lots of vendors serving wine, sangria, tapas, pastries, meats, produce...lots of stuff! I think it's really pretty! We just walked through really quickly. I hope we get a chance to go back before we leave.

Friday Favorites

While this was not a good week - It wasn't all horrible.
1) Crabs - I love crabs! Last Sunday, Josh got up SO early to go crabbing with the guys. It was his first time and he had a ton of fun. That evening, we ate em'! YUM! I even learned a new way to pick a crab and it's so much easier!
2) Paint - I may have spilled paint on the carpet, but at least I painted the room. I've been putting that project off for a long time and I'm very happy with the outcome. Once I get everything moved back in and decorate, I'll post some pictures.

3) SPAIN - It's getting so close! I'm counting down the days until I can escape reality for 11 days! I have SO much I need to do to prepare though, so it will be a very busy handful of days!

4) Natalia - I love my little niece. She's pretty much amazing. She called me yesterday to ask if she could text me. Haha. A few minutes later, I got a text saying, "I love you!" It doesn't seem like a big deal, but it basically made my day.

5) Friends - We've had great friends in NC for a long time, but it took us forever to make friends up here. Now that we have, I know they're friends we'll have forever. When the time comes for us to move, it's going to be really difficult to leave them.

6) Birthdays - Speaking of friends, we had 2 birthdays to celebrate last Friday. We went out to a restaurant for the first one, then went over to a friend's house to surprise her for the second one. We had some food, some drinks, played games and just had a great time with some good friends.

Next Week HAS to be Better!

This week has been an extremely tough week. Work has been way more stressful than usual. Luckily, this is my off Friday and I REALLY need it. I need the mental health day and I need the time to get things done.

Outside work, there were tons of those tiny little things that just went wrong. Here's my favorite of those things:

Displaying 20140812_193243.jpg
Yep, I FINALLY got around to painting the craft room/office/guest room...whatever it is today, and paint that I spilled soaked through the drop cloth without me realizing it. I found it the next day, so now I have to figure out how to get dry paint out of carpet.

Robin Williams died...so sad.

These things would have been tolerable on their own, but the worst of my week is that I lost TWO of MY loved ones.

First, I found out Tuesday morning before work that my cousin, who was like a big sister to me when I was growing up, passed away. It was not completely unexpected since we were told months ago, after her brain surgery, that she would probably never get better. That doesn't make it easy though. It's still tough to accept and very hard to believe. I still feel like it's a bad dream that I'll wake up from.I'll be going on with my daily routine and some random memory will pop in my head out of nowhere...

I'll be showering and I remember the time she took me to the pet store to pick out a fish. She picked out a beta and I picked out a tiny little black molly or some black fish. She didn't know much about betas and the people at the pet store didn't tell her our fish wouldn't make good roommates. We spent the night setting up their tank and when we woke up in the morning, my little fish was gone. She felt SO bad about it, she let me take her beta home. I can't believe I still remember that, I couldn't have been more than 5!

I'll be taking Bailey for a walk and I remember when she took me to the Backstreet Boys concert with a friend when I was in elementary school. She drove 2 crazy kids all the way to Charlotte. That takes some patience!

I'll be cooking dinner and suddenly I'll think of the day she came to see me at work to tell me she just found out her daddy had stage 4 lung cancer. I remember how I was so sad to hear that about a man who was like my grandpa growing up, but that I was heartbroken for her. How do you handle getting that news about your dad?

I'll be driving home from work and I remember the summer during college when she let me live with her...the summer after Freshman year. I had gotten a credit card and racked up more on it than I would be able to pay off before classes started back in the Fall. I got a job at Subway, right around the corner from her house. I couldn't drive my car that summer, so she let me drive hers. She didn't charge me any rent AND she helped me pay off my credit card. This was the same summer we found out about Uncle Danny. We spent many late nights talking that summer.

This is me and my "Sissy" when I was a little one.

I'm incredibly sad, but I feel SO bad for her mom and kids.

Melisa's funeral is the day that we leave for Spain, so we won't be able to make it. I would like to be there to support my family, but things work out the way they do for a reason. This is when it really sucks to live so far away from family, but I will support them as much as I can from a distance.

Also Tuesday morning, I found out my mom's dog had passed away. This was not expected. Yes, he was old and he had a heart condition, but he was OK. He was being lethargic the day before and my mom took him to the vet. Blood work looked OK, but he did need a blood transfusion and some fluids. We expected him to pull through. He ended up passing away that morning.

We've had Harley since the day he was born. He was born the day before Josh and I started dating. He could be a little jerk, but he loved HIS people.

This is Josh and my little Harley monster this past Easter.

So, yes...this week sucked.

Friday Favorites!

This week has been a very fast, but long week. Does that make sense? Here are my Friday Favorites...late as usual.

1) Trip Progress - We now have all our rooms AND all of our transportation booked for our Spain trip. Now we just have a few loose ends to tie up (and a bagillion things to do around the house) and we'll be all ready!

2) Birthdays - We had 2 friends celebrating birthdays on Friday...so we got to go to 2 birthday parties! One was a surprise-ish party at a restaurant we hadn't tried before and the other was a complete surprise. So much fun!

3) Craft Room Progress - I have finally decided to bite the bullet and paint the craft room! I hope to have an after picture shortly after we return from Spain. I would love to have it before the trip, but I think that's a little optimistic.

4) O's Game - Josh and I went to an O's game with Dave last Friday. We had a great time at the game and went to eat at a delicious Thai place a friend introduced us to a while back. Such a great night!

5) Dentist - Maybe it's weird, but I love getting my teeth cleaned! We had a dentist appointment on Tuesday, so I was a little excited about that. :-)

Jam On!

Back in June, I got invited to a Jamberry party. I wasn't very interested, but free samples were offered and I can't turn down free samples. I got my sample, applied it, and I was hooked! I went to ANOTHER Jamberry party in July and at that point, I decided to host a party. The consultant I was working with informed me that if I was interested in becoming a consultant, I could host my own party and still get the hostess rewards! I had already toyed around with the idea of becoming a consultant, so I though - why not?!?

This is my hand after just 6 days! See why I was hooked?!?

If you think you might be interested in Jamberry, take a look around my site.

Catching up AGAIN!

Work Life
Josh was approached last year about a part time opportunity. After many thoughts & prayers, we decided to go for it! He started the second job early this year and it's been going great!Yes, it's a lot of work, but it's a GREAT opportunity for him. He's getting great experience and he's working on a team he really likes!

It's been a bit harder than I thought. I thought it would give me the extra time to work on random projects I've been putting off. I was SO wrong. I guess I didn't realize how much Josh really does around the house. I've done my best to pick up the slack, but I don't get much free time at all any more as a result. I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining. I wouldn't change it and I know it's going to be great for us in the long run!

Travel
We said we wanted to travel before we have kids and we're definitely working on that this year!

In February, we went to the Dominican Republic. This picture is from Playa Fronton, such a beautiful beach!

We went to the Outerbanks in May.

We're going to Spain in less than 3 weeks! EEK!

We're going to Boston to visit Chris in September. We went about 5 years ago and we've  been trying to get back since then.

We're going to Vegas in October to celebrate Jen's birthday!

Later in October, we're going on our first backpacking camping trip. So excited about this!

Our new nephew, Daniel was born in May.

We've gone to a couple weddings.
